Testimonies of Voice Students
Kathleen Adams is a miracle worker! I'll be fifty this year and feel I sing better now than I ever have thanks to her. I have a masters of music in vocal performance but I feel because of my training with Kathleen that I have a healthier technique than I did as an opera apprentice in graduate school. I was dealing with so much tension and inconsistency. Then I got married and raised children and put my singing on the back burner. As I got older I thought I'd never really enjoy singing or performing as I had always dreamed. But after studying with Kathleen I'm now performing on stage and am teaching voice with more confidence. I'm so grateful for Kathleen and what she has taught me. I am learning more every day and have hope for my future as a singer, actress and teacher. I thank the Lord for Kathleen- she's an answer to prayer!

"My Voice has never been better since I’ve been studying with Ms Myrick. My range has gone from 2 1/2 octaves to almost 3. She has helped me develop my lower range, which was never as strong before, and my high notes are stronger than ever. I love how she has an extensive knowledge of Opera and Musical theater repertoire. I’ve been singing professionally for over 30 years and the ease and freedom I now have after studying with her is amazing. I love her vocal ease trills I use to warm up, it helps me before I got on stage and gives me such confidence. I would highly recommend her to singers from beginner to advanced professionals.
Thank you Ms Myrick." -Sean McDermott |
As a voice teacher myself I'm incredibly picky when selecting my own voice teachers. I met Kathleen while doing my vocal pedagogy certificate program at NYU and after observing her teach knew immediately that I wanted to study with her. She has an uncanny ability to pinpoint areas of challenge and precisely communicates the necessary adjustment for the most
efficient and free sound. Her ear is unsurpassed and the speed at which she can make effective corrections is beyond human. In addition to her ability to teach she is in general a great person! As someone who has not been performing professionally for a few years I've been finding it really hard to get back in the audition saddle. She has given me resources to help me find opportunities, helped me prepare and held me accountable by checking in with me on a regular basis. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful teacher and role model. -Shannon Riley |
When I was diagnosed with a vocal pathology in 2015 I started doubting my decision to go into graduate school as a performer and lost all self-confidence in my singing abilities, which up until that point had been a huge factor in defining my identity. When I started studying with Kathleen Myrick in 2016 (through NYU’s graduate program in classical voice) she gave me the understanding that my instrument (and myself by extension) is not broken, but just requires even more precision and accuracy in its coordination. Since studying with Kathleen Myrick, my range, and the comfort I feel in my range, has increased beyond what it was before my diagnoses. I have gained kinesthetic awareness of my resonance facilities and I notice a difference in my speech in addition to lack of vocal fatigue after long rehearsals or long periods speaking. Kathleen Myrick is providing me with repertoire and instruction specifically tailored to my body, instrument, character/acting abilities, and my current technical level. Kathleen Myrick approaches singing instruction the way a violin teacher approaches violin instruction: precise technical application in exercises and repertoire that nurtures technical challenges but also fosters confidence and fine tuning in musicality and expressivity, thereby nurturing the complete performer.

From a young age, I had always disliked singing. I was under the impression that some people were born talented singers while others weren't, and that I was firmly in the latter category. When I was an undergraduate senior, I had the chance to take vocal lessons with Professor Myrick and did so solely to diversify my academic course-load. Under Professor Myrick's program, I went from dreading the lessons to realizing that singing added an incredible joy to my life. In retrospect, the decision to take vocal lessons was one of the finest I made in undergrad and I continue to take Ms. Myrick's lessons post-graduation. I cannot recommend her highly enough--I have seen dramatic improvement in my vocal technique, she is an absolute pleasure to learn from, and I've had a lot of fun along the way. Thank you!

I've taken private voice lessons with many wonderful teachers during my career, but I can say without a doubt that Kathleen Myrick has the most finely tuned pair of ears and the most comprehensive voice building "tool box" of them all! She has an uncommon understanding of how the human voice works and how to make it work better! Not only that, but she is truly sensitive to the professional needs of her singers. Most of the work I do in musical theatre is as a "comedic belter", which has its challenges in terms of vocal health, but Kathleen never shies away from the realities of a career, she simply helps you find a way to improve what your voice needs to do. Through our work together, I have increased my range, agility, and endurance, and I now feel that I have whole palette of vocal techniques to choose from when it comes to approaching roles and songs. You'll probably laugh when I tell you this, but you should know that students in Kathleen Myrick's studio jokingly refer to themselves as MYRICK-ALS (like "miracles", get it?). Yes, yes, it may be corny, but it's also 100% true. She is a gifted teacher and you will be giving yourself a gift by studying with her!

I first fell in love with musical theatre and singing when I was in 3rd grade, after attending a summer camp run by Kathleen Myrick (Broadway Kid Starz). I am now 16 years old and a junior attending a performing arts high school. Even at a young age, Kathleen knew how to encourage and challenge me in a way that helped me grow and build self-confidence. After Kathleen moved to New York, I found it difficult to find other voice instructors who were able to understand my voice and ‘get the best out of me vocally’ the way she could. Eventually I stopped taking regular voice lessons, my self-confidence was suffering, and I was ready to give up my dream and quit musical theatre. Then, last year, I was so blessed to re-start lessons with Kathleen through Skype. She is truly magical and a vocal genius. She was able to immediately pinpoint my weaknesses and explain the stages my voice would go through while strengthening my head voice so that both my chest and head voice would be equal, making my overall vocals stronger and richer. She is able to explain exactly what I need to do each lesson to improve and preserve my voice to sing “healthy”. I have improved from each and every lesson, and my voice is definitely better, stronger, and the overall sound is richer, and along with that my self-confidence. Last summer I was blessed to be accepted and to attend, as a high school sophomore, the NYU Summer Tisch Musical Theatre Program, as well as regularly being cast as leads in various community theatre productions. I have had lessons “in-person” with Kathleen, but the Skype lessons are no different than the in-person ones and allow me to take lessons while I am in Florida and she is in New York. My goal is to obtain a BFA in Musical Theatre and hopefully work on Broadway or West End some day and know Kathleen is the best vocal instructor to get my voice where it needs to be.

Bella discovered a love of theatre and singing at a very young age. We were fortunate to find Ms. Myrick and Bella began taking theatre camp at age 7. It is nothing short of AMAZING what she has done for her. She has worked with her for four years and it is incredible how much her confidence has grown and her singing ability. She has had lead roles in many plays and performed vocally at various venues. This past summer she was hired at a local dinner theatre and we have since moved to New York! Bella is very excited to be close to her theatre and voice coach. She looks forward to continuing to work with Ms. Myrick ( the ABSOLUTE BEST! ) as she pursues her dreams to be a professional performer.

Since studying with Kathleen Myrick, I have found my voice in an entirely new way. Everything feels more sustainable, and I have learned that my voice can do things that I never thought it could. I have been challenged, encouraged, and greatly rewarded by all of the time I have spent with her, and if you get the honor to study with her, you will be amazed and blessed by her knowledge and capabilities in teaching voice.

I have been working consistently as a professional actor since the age of 9. Oftentimes working with professionals that are the very best in their fields. I began sessions with Kathleen at a crucial point in my career. While under a summer contract with a notable entertainment company, I experienced the change in my voice that most guys expect by the age of 12 or 13. I was almost 16, and thought my voice was broken; I seriously felt I would never be able to live out my passion. Maybe, I had only thought I could sing… maybe I was living a lie!
I am so grateful to Kathleen for providing the tools I needed to overcome my greatest vocal fears. While working through these challenges, I was able to continue my work and even audition through this transitional period. She has helped me understand that my growing voice is actually a gift. That as my voice matures I will become more versatile as a singer. Her methods have allowed me to build my falsetto and bridge the gaps in my vocal range. I look forward to my lessons with her to see what obstacles we can face together. Her attitude toward progress helps me come away feeling empowered with a greater understanding of what I need to do to improve. I am most thankful that she has helped me gain a new confidence in my ever-changing instrument. Her knowledge and guidance is immeasurable. I am forever grateful… Thank you Kathleen, for helping me find my voice again! -Jonathan Tison |
Working with Kathleen has been a wonderful experience. Over the past 3 years, I have grown as a singer, my voice has matured, and my range and the quality of my voice has gotten richer. My confidence around my instrument has grown too! I love Kathleen’s teaching style; she is approachable, supportive and incredibly knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Kathleen to singers of all levels-beginners to seasoned professionals!

I have taken voice lessons with Kathleen Myrick for 4 years. She has been an amazing voice teacher. She has done so much to help me find my voice. I never feel stressed working with her. Whether seeking help for an audition piece or performance she has never let me down. Her way of teaching helps me to find the best way to use my voice. I have been able to very noticeably increase both my range and vocal quality. The exercises she has taught me for vocal warm ups are great. I use them and it makes an amazing difference in breath control and support. I truly appreciate her availability whether meeting her in NY, FL, or Skype lesson I know I have a go to person for help when needed. Thank You so much for your help and support Ms. Myrick!

There are no words to describe the immense gratitude and appreciation I have for Kathleen Myrick. I started working with Kathleen eight years ago in a Musical Theatre Camp in Jacksonville, FL. As the years went by my voice, of course, changed and began to mature rapidly. After puberty struck with the drastic changes in range, I didn’t know how to use my new voice and had the fear that I would never sing again. I began taking a few lessons with Kathleen here and there to work on getting more comfortable with my new range and its limits. This boosted my confidence immensely and helped me to regain my passion for Musical Theatre. Kathleen’s vast knowledge of the voice and ability to manipulate it for a much healthier product is phenomenal. We have to use Skype for our voice lessons, for now, but the instruction is still solid and as effective as ever. Every single lesson you will discover, together, a new technique or trick to apply into your repertoire to benefit yourself. “The road to better is never ending.” One of the most important things to me is the relaxed and pressure free environment she creates so that we are able to explore and thrive together. I without a doubt recommend lessons with Kathleen to performers of all levels. Thank you Kathleen for your incredible ability to help us be as successful and healthy as we can be.

I've had a few voice teachers throughout my life, but Kathleen Myrick has been by far the best. I'm currently a senior in NYU Steinhardt's Music Theatre Vocal Performance program. In the past few years at NYU, Professor Myrick has reshaped the way I sing for the better. She has an impeccable ear for the nuances of the voice, for when something is right and when it needs improvement. Through communication and understanding, she will figure out a way to help you overcome any vocal obstacle. She understands what makes your voice special and she carefully brings out the best parts of it. My range has expanded leaps and bounds, and my voice is so much more clear, resonant, and energized than when I first began my vocal journey. I can do things now that I once thought I'd never be able to do! Not only have I grown as a singer, but I've also become a more confident person and artist with her guidance. She is a nurturing mentor who genuinely cares for and believes in her students. I can't imagine my vocal and artistic journey without Professor Myrick.

Kathleen Myrick is a wonderful person and talented and effective teacher. I highly recommend her to any prospective student of any musical background or singing level.
I have studied with Kathleen for over two years now and after the first 6 months I felt like a new singer. I feel like I’ve been given the tools to sing whatever I want and know my voice will do so sustainably across multiple genres, and yet I keep growing and learning with each additional lesson when I thought I would never reach this level of vocal prowess. As my interests and preferred genres sometimes shift she remains flexible and open to helping me achieve the demands of the industry in a vocally healthy way. As an observer of lessons with her other students I can confidently say that she understands that one approach doesn’t fit all and she is exceptionally dedicated to helping everyone find their own voices in the best way for them which I find to be a refreshing mentality in the NYC scene. As a student of vocal pedagogy myself I can say that Kathleen has an extensive (and always growing) knowledge of the vocal mechanism and how it works and is able to communicate these intricate details clearly and simply to help the singer achieve the best balance for their given voice. Also, her dog is adorable should you ever get to meet Miss Bella! -Rachel McKenzie |
Kathleen literally gave me a voice. When I came into her as a "belter" I thought I knew exactly what I was doing but I learned that I hadn't developed my head voice which is such a key element to singing. I am singing music that I never thought I would sing. Kathleen showed me how to use my voice in a way that will serve me for longer than just a few years. Now I have the instrument and the knowledge that I can count on. Beyond that, Kathleen gave me support and made me feel like she was on my team. So often you get teachers who make the lesson about them and with Kathleen it is always about her students and how she can help them make their best sound. She is patient, kind, fun and encouraging making you feel like you've won every lesson. I owe so much to her as a singer, a teacher, and a friend. 💗

I was connected to Kathleen through my speech and voice pathologist at NYU Langone. After three years in an intensive conservatory-style musical theater program, overuse and stress had taken its toll on my voice. Kathleen found the problem areas quickly and helped me regain my range, connect me to my breath and most importantly, made sure my singing always felt easy and healthy. She has a laser-sharp set of skills for identifying challenges and pinpointing exactly which exercises will strengthen your voice.
Whenever I have an important audition or a show, Kathleen is always there to help me feel as prepared and confident as I possibly can. I am so thankful I met her and have the opportunity to be her pupil! -Portia Boston |
Kathleen Myrick was the first teacher I ever had who took the t of singing. In the beginning, I found the lessons to be quite challenging, as I was pushed entirely out of my comfort zone! After literally ten lessons, my singing was transformed. Through working with Professor Myrick, I have been able to sing in a more resonant, stable, and healthy place, something I know I can sustain for 8 shows a week or more when necessary. Also, I really appreciate the fact that she cuts out the bad habits.
She is also very helpful and available. When I had a "next day" appointment audition for a Broadway show, she made sure to fit me in her schedule immediately. I appreciated that she made the time for me when it was important! -Elena Safar |
Kathleen Myrick is the best Voice Teacher in New York City. In New York, there are plenty of teachers who can pick decent repetoire and help you make artistic choices while expanding your range and increasing your stamina, but that's not good enough, and Kathleen knows this.
Instead of relying on the bells and whistles of show business teaching, Kathleen uses her deeply rooted knowledge of vocal pedagogy to habilitate her students. Big words - let me break it down: Kathleen's knowledge of anatomy and physiology, paired with many years of experience allows her to hear a sound, diagnose exactly why it sounds the way it does, and then shift the production to a more optimal level through tools and applications. Her goal is to help you find your authentic voice so that you can sing with ease and sustainability in whatever resonance strategy or genre your heart desires. Before Kathleen, I never recieved an honest answer when I asked why something wasn't working in a lesson. If I couldn't hit a note, a teacher would say "you're not trying hard enough - support more." In Kathleen's studio, she'll tell me that I'm not using enough air, my embouchure is too open, and that my velum is dropped, resulting in a close VPO port, placing my entire system out of balance, resulting in tension and an unclear sound (or something as specific and brilliant). Then she'll give me a tool or a series of tools to adjust my production. How many voice teachers know how to align your sound waves (think AP PHysic, friends) to achieve an optial sound a specific frequency? Kathleen does. It's called a standing wave. I'll let her teach you how to do one, and let me tell you- your life will change once you try! Besides being an absolute voice magician, she's very well versed in vocal repetoire across genres and works with all voice types. In addition to taking lessons with Kathleen, I've also observed her teach while I was enrolled in the NYU Steinhart Vocal Pedagogy Certificate Program. After observing many teachers, I can firmly state that she has the best application at NYU across gender, genre, and voice type, particularly with sopranos. She's a genius. You might think that a teacher this impressive holds a strict lesson, but an hour with Kathleen is a blast and a half! Best hour of your week! She's a real hoot and knows how to balance work and play. If you want a voice teacher who puts you first, improves your voice in a healthy and sustainable way, and takes genuine interest in your well-being, study with her. She is why I stayed at NYU and finished my Master's Degree. -Sophia Santore |
I am a male soprano. Before my first lesson with Prof. Myrick, I was extremely concerned that she might not know how to properly deal with male sopranos. I felt anxious, worried that she might tell me “I'm confused” or that “I should be a tenor because guys with high voices are ALL tenors”.
However, to my surprise, Prof. Myrick fully embraced the soprano in me and encouraged me to treasure my gift! I was so relieved as I finally found a voice teacher who understood my range; a teacher who embraced who I really am as a performer. One year of weekly voice lessons with Prof. Myrick revolutionized my singing. Before meeting her, I was constantly worried about the instability and inconsistency of my voice, especially when a performance is near. Through Prof. Myrick’s emphasis on vocal consistency, she and I developed personalized tools for my voice to always be on fleek. Whenever I go to her with a bad-voice-day, she could literally "fix me" within minutes - with a few simple lip trills and airflow tricks. She could so quickly identify what’s “off” in my voice with her sharp SHARP ears, it’s like magic. Throughout the school year, I’ve learned to fully trust her. She's gained my trust and she deserves my trust! In rehearsals, Prof. Myrick’s words always come to mind. I often try to recreate the exact experience in a class by applying the tools she had instilled in me. Vowel modification, tongue adjustment, airflow increase, good posture are some of her fundamental tools that work magic for my voice. Instead of blindly applying the techniques, Prof. Myrick would teach me HOW and WHY these techniques work, thus expediting the recreation of the sounds that worked in class. There were days I went to class completely exhausted - papers, midterms, finals, and whatnot. On these days, I felt like chatting with Prof. Myrick so we could chill. You would think that she would have wanted a break, but that’s not the case. She was so full of energy and she encouraged me to make the most out of my lesson, as long as I don’t push myself too hard. Moments like this really made me appreciate having a passionate and loving teacher, who actually wants me to learn. To sum things up: Prof. Myrick’s really REALLY good at what she does! We heart Prof. Myrick. -Khye Borg Liew |
Kathleen came into my life at a time when I thought I wouldn't be able to consider singing in any kind of professional capacity again. I started singing at a young age with no guidance and unfortunately taught myself in a very harmful way; scream singing to the max. Before I even got into college, the daily choir and musical rehearsals beat my voice into submission, until one day I found that it was extremely difficult and uncomfortable to sing. I decided to go to the doctor where I found that I had a couple of tiny nodes sitting on my vocal cords. A solid year of vocal rest brought my cords back into health, but I was convinced that my cords were just "too weak" to function in any kind of high demand environment.
Enter Kathleen (like a angel) into my college vocal department as a new professor the year I decided to jump back into things and give singing a try again. I couldn't have asked for more of a miracle - I happened to come across a vocal coach that had studied the physiology of the voice and the way in which to build a healthy voice that could function at the top of its ability. Piece by piece, we've rebuilt my technique from a muscled up, force driven mechanism to a resonant and flow driven mechanism. I've learned to travel through my range with ease & efficiency rather than tension and force. Kathleen is beyond patient and has a hundred different ways to explain something, as well the Mary Poppins bag of vocal exercises she'll take you through in order to achieve a well-balanced voice. I'm no longer concerned that singing in any kind of demanding capacity would be an issue for my voice and am confident in my range & agility across any genre. Beyond the singing, Kathleen is just such an encouraging and supportive person who always has your best interest in mind and is actually interested in troubleshooting and figuring out how best to make your voice shine. -Kelly Thomas |
After completing my masters at New York University in the Spring 2017 and beginning the jump into the audition circuit in NYC I knew that I would need someone to help me keep up the technique, repertoire, and efficiency of my voice. I met Kathleen through my studies at NYU, and paid close attention to how she worked with singers, and also to the results her singers were achieving. So after graduating and then in the need for a new teacher it wasn’t even a conversation, I knew I had to study with her, and it’s been the best decision of my career.
I started singing with Kathleen in Fall 2017 and since beginning studies my voice has grown in ways I never thought possible. Within my lessons I have found more consistent resonance awareness, sense of ease in singing, increased breathe management/flow, vowel modification techniques, range extension, new repertoire, forward placement, soft palate awareness, ….the list goes on and on and the tools she uses during lessons enable us as students to find the same sensations on our own outside of lessons. Lessons with Kathleen have opened my eyes to my own potential, and have also challenged me to continue building on my current techniques and vocal abilities. Kathleen is kind, honest, and has an amazing ear! Also I have to mention that her attention to detail is insane, and her ability to give descriptive and accurate instructions is extraordinary. I trust her with my whole heart, and she has been there through all my vocal stumbles and helped me come up for air, which every singer needs in this crazy city. She’s my top recommendation for a voice teacher here in New York City. -Shelley Mitchell |
Kathleen Myrick has been an absolute SAINT in terms of my vocal development. Coming from a background of mostly contemporary voice and musical theatre, I had never really had much classical training. When I was paired with Kathleen at NYU, I was introduced to a whole new world of singing. At first, this was daunting, but four years of hard work later, under Kathleen’s direction, my voice is now stronger than ever. I have booked jobs and been called back for shows that I am more than certain I would not have ever been considered for before studying with her. The classical foundation that Kathleen built has made my belt ten times stronger and my range larger than I ever thought was possible. I am now confident that no matter how nervous I am before an audition or a large performance, my voice will not suffer from this as I am always able to fall back on Kathleen’s training to save me. No matter what, I know that I will never crack or push my voice as I feared before I met her. Kathleen is incredibly attentive and meticulous in her approach, she is focussed on driving a vocalist to be the best that they can be and will not let you get away with unhealthy technique. This was of course, frightening at first, but something that I am so grateful for four years later. There have been many times where I have felt like I was not good enough or like I should give up, but Kathleen has always been there to pick me up and push me forward in those hard times. Not only is Kathleen a phenomenal voice teacher that I would recommend to everyone and anyone, she is one of the most incredible and generous people I have ever met and I am so thankful and grateful for everything she has done for me, both in my career and personal life.

Professor Myrick is an extremely masterful voice teacher. I would say she was a voice wizard because she is full of extremely valuable knowledge that absolutely does feel like magic. She is exceedingly attuned to her student’s technique. My voice has never been stronger and I have never felt more ease in my singing since studying with her. She has unlocked parts of my voice that I have struggled with for years. In the one year I have studied with her, I have been so surprised with the ease at which I can sing. She really has such an abundance of knowledge about the voice and every lesson with her is valuable and packed with precious and useful information. She is such a joy to be around and makes her students feel truly comfortable. She really creates a safe and encouraging environment that promotes vocal growth. She listens to my individual wants and needs and tailors our lessons to my path specifically. She taught me how to belt in a healthy way that compliments the training I use in my head-voice, so I never feel like I am sacrificing one for the other, they both compliment each other. She is completely invested in the growth of her students and she is truly our number one supporter. She has taken time outside of lessons to make sure I am grasping the material and understanding everything, which means the world to me. I am over-the-moon thrilled with the training I received so far from her. She has shown me things about my voice that I never thought were possible and for that, I am forever grateful.

I moved from Lagos, Nigeria to New York in 2015 where I enrolled in the NYU Steinhardt school. There I was incredibly lucky that Kathleen was assigned to me. I’ve had many vocal teachers growing up but Kathleen is by far the most intelligent, gifted, sensitive and funny vocal teacher I have had. I had been using improper technique most of my singing career which Kathleen was able to quickly notice. With that, she used her knowledge of vocal pedagogy to point me in the right direction and help me get into a proper technique. Her knowledge of vocal pedagogy and performance experience really makes her an excellent vocal teacher. She’s able to explain to you exactly how the vocal cords work, what you’re doing wrong with and how to fix it. Unlike teacher I've worked who would tell me to strain, try harder or just support more, Kathleen really breaks down what is happening in my throat/mouth and what should be happening instead. I’ve never met someone so in tune with their instrument, thanks to her I have found more consistent resonance, developed more breath and soft palate awareness, found forward placement and developed such a bigger love for singing and performing.
Not only is she an amazing teacher, but she’s also a great friend. She’s ready to listen to me if an audition or performance went wrong, or even if I’m just having a bad day. She gives great advice and is oh so willing to help with anything music related. Over the past 4 years, we have made an amazing connection and understanding of my vocal instrument. She is definitely one of the reasons I have decided to jump the gun and pursue singing as a career. - Christine C. Obiamalu |
After 15+ years of total retirement from professional singing (really from all singing), I accepted one very special request to sing in the church at my brother's wedding. A stroke of luck led me to Kathleen, without whom I am sure I could not have pulled this off. Listening back to my lessons as I practiced at home it was clear that my frustrations with myself and my aging and unused pipes were coming through loud and clear however Kathleen never, ever failed to be graceful, encouraging, and realistic even when I didn't deserve it. She taught me to both really trust my breath and access a lift in my soft pallet with a reliability that I don't remember having even during the 10 years that I studied and performed full-time. Having that incredibly solid base on which to rest my sound was the key to what I am happy to report was a very, very good day in the church. I am so glad that I trusted the process even when I didn't really understand it. So while I am going back into retirement, I cannot more highly recommend Kathleen Myrick.

I worked with Kathleen for four years while I studied musical theatre at NYU. Not only did she change my voice, but she completely changed my attitude towards singing and performing. Her technique is impeccable with all styles of singing and genres and she is constantly coming up with new tools to keep things fresh and keep improving even when you think it can’t get any better. She always made me comfortable in my lessons and made me feel cared about. My voice is miles away from what I started with when I began my lessons with Kathleen and I will always be thankful. An amazing and intuitive teacher, and also a friend, mentor, and role model. I can not recommend more!

Words cannot describe what my life has become because of working with Kathleen. 10 years ago, I auditioned for a show in her musical theatre summer camp (Broadway Kid Starz) having very little vocal training. I have been doing theatre since a very young age but when I met Kathleen and sang for her for the first time I knew I had found an amazing instructor. Kathleen has been my vocal coach for 10 years now and it amazes me how my voice has improved so much because of everything she has taught me. My vocal range has expanded and I have learned so much about my voice as far as properly singing. She has taught me how to get correct breath control and air flow, the many techniques for any genre of singing and how to be confident with my voice. Before Kathleen, I had such a soft, quiet voice because I was scared to come out with what I had all along. She helped me find my voice and I am truly thankful for all of the work she has done for me. Kathleen is a true inspiration in my life and I wouldn't be where I am today in my musical theatre life without all that she has taught me. I look forward to continuing to work with her. Thanks to what she has taught me, it has landed me lead roles in musicals, and not to mention she has protected my voice from becoming damaged. I have done so much in my life because of her. With all of the training I had from her, I was able to attend Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida graduating with a concentration in voice and now I will be graduating this May 2020 with my Master's in Theatre Education from Adelphi University in New York and will continue my studies further to get a Master's in developmental disabilities at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where I will work with children who are special needs and use the dramatic arts and music as a therapeutic approach. Kathleen is a huge part of my life and I can't wait to see where my future continues. My voice will continue to get stronger each day just by working with Kathleen.

Kathleen’s an absolutely fantastic voice teacher. I’ve always loved singing, but I always used to sing in such a way that my voice would hurt after and I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get the sound of professionals. Kathleen has taken my voice to the next level and done so in such a healthy way. My voice never hurts after our lessons, my range is improving, and the sound is so much better. Even though we have virtual lessons, she is able to pick up on all the little variations in my singing that even I don’t hear, and she has so many tools to help me make little adjustments. She also takes into considerations my goals - for example, I want to learn how to belt, and so she’s chosen songs for us to work on to help me build up to that in a healthy way. Plus, she’s helping me choose and work on songs that I can use for auditions. 10/5 stars!

For three years at NYU, while pursuing my M.M. and Advanced Certificate in vocal pedagogy, Kathleen guided my vocal journey, molding my voice from a belter without much access to head voice into an opera singer. Her pristine ear for vocal quality combined with her deep understanding of the functions of the voice were the tools I needed to have a thorough proprioceptive awareness of my instrument for the first time in my life. In 19 years of singing, I can say that my voice is the most free it has ever felt. Kathleen’s specificity in lessons changed singing technique from something esoteric into something tangible. Not only has Kathleen been an amazing voice teacher, but she has also been an invaluable mentor in my own journey to become a voice pedagogue, providing guidance on concepts that were new and sometimes difficult to understand. Because of my personal experiences in voice lessons, and our conversations on vocal pedagogy, I aspire to be as well-educated and well-versed in vocal technique as Kathleen one day. I look forward to our lessons every week, and I am excited to continue this journey with her, and to now sing all styles of music with functional freedom.

I have worked with Kathleen for 6+ years. She has seen me through from being a college student to a working professional in the industry. What I appreciate most about Kathleen’s lessons are that they focus on long-term growth as well as immediate actionable steps. Her lessons provide daily warmups customized to target growth areas unique to you. As such, no matter your goal as a singer you will have clear tools to help you progress over time. However, as a performer, I often get last-minute auditions/ gigs where I don’t have months or even days to prepare. In these instances, not only does Kathleen go above and beyond to make sure to fit me in for a lesson prior to the audition but she helps me quickly make adjustments to optimize my singing right then and there. If you are looking for someone to help you optimize your voice, offer professional feedback, create actionable steps to address weaknesses and be your biggest cheerleader (both on and off the stage) then Kathleen Adams is the perfect vocal coach for you!

There aren’t enough kind words I can say about Professor Adams. When I came into her studio, I was a confused yet passionate singer, one that had been told “no, you can’t,” time and time again. I was vocally lost, and I was looking for answers and understanding. She met me with all that and then some. Professor Adams has had a HUGE impact on my voice, my teaching philosophy and above all else, my artistic soul. Throughout my two years as a graduate student, she has provided me with insightful tools and pedagogical techniques to help me reach my vocal goals.
Professor Adams works diligently and effectively, and all for good reason. I’ve learned how to work smarter and not harder when it came to my voice, but also when it came to learning how to be a teacher. I was never told “no, you can‘t,” but rather ”heck yes!” to whatever vocal venture I had my gaze on. Whenever I felt confused stylistically, she always knew how to manage “industry expectations” without compromising clean, healthy vocal production. I now have more colors to play with and tools to put in my toolbox... but what has moved me most of all is her kindness and support. Through immense praise and intense laughing sessions, the tweaking, the flow fingers, the reverse snore resets and gargles, I learned how to be an advocate for my students. As she is for me. A cheerleader. A fan. She is all those things and more and I am forever grateful for her and how she has changed my vocal journey. -Raquelle Viteri |
When I first began my journey at NYU I was anxious to learn who would be my assigned vocal instructor. I knew that a voice teacher was not just a professor, but a spiritual guide of sorts. My undergrad experience was full of many bumps and bruises, so I was looking for a soft place to land and a solid foundation to build upon. By the grace of God, I was blessed with a guardian angel in Kathleen Adams.
In my time with her, she was diligent and meticulous as she took the time to intimately know my voice. She stripped down bad habits, looked for the core of my authentic sound and strengthened as she shaped my voice. It was such a relief to know I could trust this woman, without hesitation to take care of my voice and that I would come out each day with a deeper understanding and heavier toolkit. I often came into my lessons as an overwhelmed whirlwind and she cared for my spirit in a very similar manner as she did for my voice. I always asked a multitude of questions and was always so impressed with her patience for me and the incredibly brilliant answers she gave! Kathleen Adams is just about one of my favorite people I’ve ever met. She has completely changed in the BEST way who I am as a performer, teacher and person. I will always strive to be more like her in each of those areas. I am forever thankful. And when in doubt, I’ll always add more flow ;) ~Amanda Duisenberg |

Kathleen is an outstanding voice teacher! She has been coaching my daughter for over two years and not only helped her overcome some vocal cord issues but move beyond them to reach much more range and build her self-confidence. Kathleen managed to keep my active eleven year-old engaged in drills and complex exercises, while making it fun and challenging for her. I would recommend Kathleen to both adults and determined kids. Kathleen’s dedication and professionalism are unparalleled.

When I met Kathleen, I was a musician and actor who had never had formal training as a singer. I was always shy and nervous about my singing voice, and had stopped singing in public. Over the three and a half years we’ve worked together, Kathleen has given me the tools to control my own technique. Her ear is almost unfathomably good – after mere seconds of listening to me sing anything, she somehow knows exactly what’s going on inside my body, and from that, she provides appropriate, practical strategies I can use to adjust whatever needs adjusting. Since I met her, the quality of my singing has improved dramatically. Even before COVID lockdowns, I had lessons with Kathleen both in person and remotely, and she is equally skilled at teaching in both settings. On top of that, she’s simply delightful to talk to. Every lesson is a joy, and I can’t recommend her enough!

Kathleen Adams is absolutely amazing! I am incredibly blessed to work with such an expert vocal coach who is also so kind, empathetic, and compassionate. Working with Kathleen has improved my own awareness of my voice as well as my connection to all the physical and emotional aspects of performance. My tool box of exercises expands with each lesson, and each tool is fascinatingly useful in building healthy, sustainable singing habits. As a high school senior, Kathleen helped me so much throughout the college audition process. During a busy audition season, it is so important to focus on vocal health. My work with Kathleen certainly helped me maintain that vocal health and clarity, while I continued to explore the characterization of my pieces. I see the progress that I have made under her tutelage in my growing confidence and clarity as a singing-actor. I look forward to each lesson so much and always leave with a huge smile on my face! A lesson with Kathleen is an hour of hard work, progress, and fun. Her enthusiasm for the voice is absolutely infectious! I cannot imagine where I would be without her, and I am so thankful. Working with Kathleen will be the best decision you ever make!

I thought that I would never be able to sing professionally again before I started taking lessons with Kathleen. I was right in the middle of getting my Masters in Vocal Performance when I started having issues with my voice. No ENT could figure out what was going on until I went to the NYU Voice Center and they told me I had vocal atrophy. I was devastated because my voice teacher, at the time, through my university did not know how to work with me once my voice started leaving me. Luckily, my vocal therapist at the NYU Voice Center recommended Kathleen and said that she had worked with others who had the same issue. As soon as I met Kathleen, I felt at ease. The shame I had for what my voice sounded like was completely gone and she never once made it seem that I had an issue that was unsolvable. She is so kind, patient, and supportive. I have been taking lessons with Kathleen for over two years now and I have retrained my voice to sing in a healthy way that not only makes my voice “passable”, which is all I thought I could achieve after the atrophy, but free, easy and far smoother than it was even before I developed atrophy. Kathleen’s arsenal of exercises and knowing exactly which one will work for me no matter what style I am singing in will never cease to amaze me. Even after a full day of teaching middle school, I leave every lesson with my voice feeling even more relaxed and healthy than it did before the lesson started. She is nothing less than an angel and a miracle worker!

I had been singing and taking voice lessons on and off for nearly 20 years, and it was not until I started working with Kathleen in graduate school that I began to notice a real change in how my voice felt and sounded in truly a matter of weeks. Kathleen's approach is rooted in a series of exercises and tools that focus on air flow, placement, and resonance in a way that I have never experienced with anyone else -- her technique is intuitive, it can be applied immediately, and its given me a totally new understanding of how I can support my voice in a way that's healthy and efficient and very clear. I have a specific set of tools that I turn to now (far beyond just basic scales) that get me centered and ready to go. And I know exactly how to troubleshoot when things don't feel right. Kathleen's ear is unlike anyone else, that's her magic trick -- she will stop you in your tracks and get you back on track, so that instead of inadvertently reifying old, bad habits (like I've done with many voice teachers past), you are building new, positive healthy ones from the get go. This is extremely important. I'd recommend Kathleen hands down -- she's a highly trained, experienced professional who knows the voice inside and out and will guide you right to the next step on your vocal journey!

Professor Adams has completely changed my life with her coaching. I had no idea how much strain I was putting on my voice until she intimated the importance of proper placement, breath, and flow. She quickly recognized all of my bad habits and their causes (including turning left to face an imaginary choral director from the Soprano section!) and has been able to help me press reset on many of my hang-ups. I've jokingly called her a witch a number of times because of her magical ability to solve all my vocal problems in seconds, even over zoom. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the voice and teaches not only what to do but how and why to do it so that her students may become more familiar with their own instruments and how to better utilize their unique talents. I came away from just one year of lessons with pages of notes and techniques I can apply going forward, as well as an accessible warm-up Professor Adams helped me learn to run myself. In twelve years of private voice lessons I have never had a teacher nearly as wise, kind, or intelligent. She is a life-saver!

I can’t recommend working with Kathleen more. She is a vocal wizard - able to course correct a singer after 10+ years of poor technique. When we first started working together, my voice would hurt after only an hour of rehearsals. My sound was forced, and my soft palate was not engaged - and I lacked the confidence or know-how to change it. Luckily, Kathleen was able to help me, and now I have an arsenal of skills to draw upon to sing for hours. I will work with her forever.

Professor Adams is absolutely everything that you need in a vocal coach. Never in my 15 years of voice lessons and professional singing career have I ever had an instructor so successfully pin point, hone in and smooth out my vocal challenges so quickly and effectively. Professor Adams did all that and more (and over Zoom)! I had the pleasure of being assigned to her studio while pursuing my Master of Fine Arts at NYU Tisch. In a mere matter of months, I had accumulated a plethora of exercises and tools meant specifically for ironing out my register transitions, softening my belt, strengthening my mix and targeting other problem areas. Thanks to Professor Adams' true tailoring of her lessons to each student's personal needs, my vocal technique improved more in 9 months with her than it had in the 5 years prior. If you are looking to break out of bad habits, rebuild healthy ones and make some serious long-lasting vocal change, then do not fear. Professor Adams is here.

I feel fortunate that from my first semester at NYU I was able to work with a voice teacher who was such a good fit for me and my voice. Professor Adams explained things in ways I could understand and implement (even if it took me a few tries!). Her descriptions of how things should feel and sound helped me to know when I was doing an exercise correctly, rather than relying on external feedback alone. When all of my classes transitioned to virtual instruction, my voice lessons with Professor Adams were among the few things that lost very little effectiveness – I felt that even over facetime she could hear me and offer the same detailed guidance. I even put on a virtual recital from home – and it was the best I’ve ever felt about a solo performance. I am so grateful to Professor Adams for providing that consistency and guidance that helped me to continue to develop my voice over these past four years. Thank you!!!

After singing the diagnostic, my NYU journey with Dr. Adams began. She is an amazing voice teacher who can quickly find your problem and then suggests a solution that fits your voice. Since the pandemic, my first year of classes was taken virtually, even though I was in China and she was in the US, but we overcame the jet lag. Through FaceTime, she can still find my problems. In the two years of studying with her, by the healthy vocal methods she teaches, my voice has changed a lot, it has become much lighter than before and I can feel my progress every week. Also, she is an excellent educator, I think vocal music is a very abstract thing, but Dr. Adams can visualize abstract things in her own ways. She is not only a teacher to me, but also a friend, and I feel happy in every moment with her.

Dr. Adams is an incredible voice teacher and human being, and I count myself so lucky to have her in my life. I began my training with Dr. Adams in 2018 as a classical voice student at NYU and continued my studies with her after graduation to continue building my technique and prepare for grad school auditions. Under her guidance and training, I was accepted to four prestigious graduate school programs on scholarship for vocal performance. Throughout our six years together, she has completely transformed my voice to feel and sound consistently balanced, resonant, fuller, and freer throughout my entire expanded range from top to bottom in one voice. After working with Dr. Adams, I can now confidently rely on my technique to get me through the most difficult arias or long singing days without any fatigue, and I can attribute a great part of that to the healthy and efficient practice techniques that she has so successfully instilled in me and all of her students. She is a master of vocal pedagogy, which greatly informs her teaching and my own learning of my instrument in a safe, comfortable, and trusting environment, where I can always rely on her to keep me honest. Not only is Dr. Adams a real voice magician and technician, but she is also a great friend and mentor who cares about her students more than anything. I am beyond grateful for Dr. Adams and all of the tools and wisdom that she’s provided over the years, and it’s because of her that I can now comfortably and confidently rely on my operatic technique in graduate school and beyond in the professional world.

'Dr. Kathleen Adams has completely transformed my voice! I have been fortunate enough to have her as my voice teacher at NYU for the past 3 years. She is such an incredibly skilled teacher with a deep understanding of how the voice works. Dr. Adams has developed the most helpful “tool box” for her students and I know that I will use these various vocal “tools” for years to come. As I begin my career as a high school choir teacher, I will make sure to pass along all that I have learned from Dr. Adams to my future students. Thank you so much Dr. Adams for helping me find my voice!

I’ve had the fortunate opportunity of working with Dr. Kathleen Adams as my voice teacher at NYU over the past 3 years. Her constructive understanding and knowledge of how the voice works really blew my mind, and made me discover things that I never knew before. She made my lessons a very safe and welcoming environment, and through all of the ups and downs, she was always there to guide me. I really loved her tools during the warm-ups and creating a tool chart was one of my favorite things that I have ever done. Because of her, I feel confident in how my voice developed over the years, and I am grateful for all of the tools, tips and advice that she has given me over the years. My passion for general music and choir will shine through through what I have learned for Dr. Adams. Thank you so much for everything!

Dr. Adams is one of the most efficient and intelligent voice instructors I have had the pleasure to work with and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to study with her at New York University over the past two years. Her vast knowledge of vocal pedagogy and performance is astounding and is what allows her to explain so thoroughly how and why the exercises and technique she is teaching work. She has helped me to become much more aware of how my voice and healthy vocal technique feel in the body- which has helped me grow immensely as I now know exactly what sensations to be aware of. I am in awe of her incredible ear and ability to immediately pinpoint any inconsistencies in the vocal mechanism and then describe exactly what to change in the voice production in order to strengthen and master the challenge. In these two short years with Dr. Adams, I have not only found growth in my range and vocal technique, but have also gained a wealth of knowledge and deeper understanding of my voice. There is no challenge that she cannot face and accomplish; she is such an intelligent, kind, and supportive voice instructor and I could not recommend her enough!

Working with Dr. Kathleen Adams over the past few years at NYU has completely revolutionized my voice and the way in which I approach singing, and I am so grateful that I was placed in her studio! Her understanding of how the human voice works is unparalleled, and her ability to translate that knowledge into functional and purposeful vocal exercises is valuable to singers of any and all skill levels. Dr. Adams facilitates the development of a highly technical, precision-based vocal mechanism in her students, but she does so in a way that is approachable, easily absorbed, and replicable in individual practice—students will leave each lesson with new “tools” and learning objectives to focus on in their own practice sessions, making the learning process much more efficient.
Though my lessons are usually very work oriented, that isn’t to say there aren’t times when Dr. Adams is ready to slow things down when I need it. She listens to her students with patience and compassion, and is always happy to provide what guidance and advice she can. It has been such a joy to work with Dr. Adams during my time at NYU, and I will forever be grateful for her. -Alexandra Rose Meli |
When I began taking lessons with Dr. Adams through NYU’s graduate program in music theatre, I was very unsure of my singing, largely due to a misunderstanding of breathing and vocal placement. Dr. Adams helped me so much to understand these most key elements of my voice and how to put them into practice effectively. I also greatly appreciate the focus she puts on students being able to independently put the warm ups and vocal exercises into practice. She takes great care to not only demonstrate and explain the tools she uses but also to ensure that her students are able to replicate them on their own consistently. I feel so grateful to have studied with Dr. Adams and really feel she has helped me to grow as a singer.

I studied voice under Dr. Adam’s guidance for all four years of my NYU education, and I’m so grateful for having been placed with her. I have grown so much as a vocalist with her meticulous training. Dr. Adams is so extremely knowledgeable about the voice as an instrument, and her teaching has allowed me to lend my voice to styles and songs I had once not thought possible for me to sing. With her focus, skillset, and most of all encouragement, my own knowledge of vocal technique has grown so much stronger. She taught me not just to listen to myself, but to really feel innately what’s going on with my instrument, allowing me to develop a deeper connectivity between my brain/body/breath/voice as a whole. But above all else, Dr. Adams has always made her lessons a safe space: she is a hardworking but extremely kind instructor who has always been there to lend a listening ear over the years I’ve worked with her. She has always pushed me to be my very best and supported my journey as a singer. Thank you Dr. Adams for everything!

After training with the same voice teacher, all throughout my adolescence, when moving to New York to attend NYU Tisch, I was very nervous about finding a new voice teacher. Enter Kathleen Adams — a masterful, kind-hearted professional who has completely changed my voice and perception of singing. Her ability to integrate music theory, vocal pedagogy and effective storytelling techniques in a way that is not only informative but engaging has helped me grow immensely as a musical theater performer. I look forward to our lessons each week as Kathleen greets me with a smile, and occasionally her piano princess puppy Bella. Kathleen approaches students with professionalism, honesty and a personal commitment to growth. I cannot imagine studying voice with anyone else. After you take voice with Dr. Kathleen Adams you will never look back -- I know I haven't.

Kathleen Adams has exceptional teaching skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to inspire her students to reach their best (and beyond) make her a strong and unwavering asset to not only the NYU Steinhardt community but the vocal community as a whole. I am forever grateful for her guidance and mentorship, as she has played a pivotal role in my personal development and journey as a singer (classical, musical theatre, etc.). I have been Kathleen Adams Voice student for the my entire NYU college career. It is because of her I am the singer and performer that I am today. From day one she knew exactly what my trouble points were, and helped me develop the technique and skills to fix them through her many “voice tools”. I am fascinated by her extensive knowledge on vocal pedagogy where she would explain to me why we did the tools we did, and how that related pedagogically to the voice, so I understood how to use them in my own practice. Since studying with Professor Adams I have developed a healthier vocal technique and wider range. I cannot imagine anyone more qualified and perfect to guide me in my musical career.

From a young age, I always wished to study opera. I went through various means of trying to acquire a teacher to further my education after doing much practice on my own. Little did I know that I would discover the answer to my prayers through NYU as a Masters student in Creative Writing. Upon discovering that I can take on private lessons as a non major student, I met Dr. Adams. From the very beginning I informed her about my love of literature and writing but also my love of music and eagerness to learn and further my studies in opera performance. She immediately took the reins of channeling my desires into something tangible. Dr. Adams is a rare gem among instructors. There is no generic blueprint to her instruction. She is able to give a technical analysis of your voice along with strategic and impactful guidelines on how to not only make improvements but to also reach your singing goals. One goal specific to me was that I always wanted to be able to belt. For so long I was unable to do so and felt very strained in my throat from trying. I assumed it just wasn’t meant for me. When I expressed my experience to Dr. Adams, she not only sympathized with me and articulated what my voice was doing that made belting a struggle to partake in but she knew exactly what to do to allow me to belt. In one lesson no less! Now as I graduate with an MFA in Creative Writing, I will be attending the Queen’s Summer Vocal Institute’s Opera Division. I am truly forever grateful to Dr. Adams.

It has been an honor to study under Dr. Adams for the entirety of my time at NYU undergrad. Through her diligent training, my voice has produced a sound that I never thought could be possible. I came to her as a classical singer with very little training in musical theatre and jazz. Even after just a few sessions with her, my voice started to develop a stronger mix in order to produce the more modern musical theatre sound while also strengthening my classical range. Her precision to molding the voice to its full potential is unmatched. She simultaneously works with what sound you hope to produce while also training you to be able to accomplish styles far different than what you thought could be possible. Her knowledge in the field of vocal pedagogy is rare and beautiful to work with. I look forward to each and every lesson with Dr. Adams because there is discovery within every vocal exercise, song and story that she provides. She is also just a wonderful human being to be in the presence of and is so thoughtful and caring with her teaching methods without any sugarcoating. Every tweak and adjustment is for your benefit and the progress I have felt from my lessons has been tremendous. I feel so much more confident in the quality and strength of my voice and will continue to study under her for as long as possible. Working with Dr. Kathleen Adams during my four years at NYU was transformative for my voice and overall confidence as a singer. When I first started, I knew I loved singing and musical theatre but was unsure of the extent of my vocal abilities. Under her expert guidance, my voice has grown stronger, more versatile, and refined. She has an incredible ability to tailor lessons to my unique needs, pushing me to reach new heights while always being supportive. I never once felt judged or out of place when with Dr. Adams, but felt continuously challenged – in the best way – in every lesson from my first one my freshman year to my last one a week before graduation. Thanks to her, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of vocal technique and artistry, and my voice has truly flourished. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned from her and continue to use her tools on a daily basis. She is everything one could want in vocal coach and more, making her students feel both loved and challenged as she shares her infinite musical wisdom. Thank you Dr. Adams!!

I met Kathleen during my first semester at NYU, purely by chance. An academic advisor informed me that I was short on credits and suggested taking vocal lessons to fulfill the requirement. Singing was never my forte; in fact, I hated it because I believed I had no talent for it. My brother is the singer in our family, and watching his dramatic progress inspired me to give it a try.
Kathleen helped me discover a voice I never knew I had. With her patience, kindness, and deep understanding of vocal arts, she built a strong foundation for me and gave me the confidence to continue this journey of finding my voice. Beyond her exceptional teaching, Kathleen has become a good friend and has guided me in growing not just as a singer, but as a person. I feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to have found such an amazing mentor and person to be my first vocal teacher. -Nicholas Tannuzzo |
